Your First Journey to China

Start with a focused route and leave room for what surprises you.

Start with a focused route and leave room for what surprises you.

Choose a focused first route

For a first visit, consider the contrast you most want: imperial history and contemporary cities, or cultural places and countryside. Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai create one clear beginning. Adding Guilin or Yunnan changes both the atmosphere and the time needed.

Plan travel days as real days

Rail and flights connect the route, but station transfers, waiting and luggage still take time. Avoid filling a transfer day with major visits at both ends. A light arrival evening can make the next full day much more enjoyable.

Prepare the practical details

Confirm entry requirements against official information for your nationality and itinerary. Think about connectivity, payment options, dietary needs and the language support you prefer. The travel-guide collection provides questions to work through before you book.

Leave room for discovery

Keep a few hours unplanned in each city. A neighbourhood walk, a local breakfast or another visit to a favourite place can become the part you remember most clearly. A first journey should give you a reason to return.

An imperial past. An unexpected present.
