Choose a season around the landscape you most want to experience.
Spring: gardens and fresh green
Jiangnan is a natural starting point for a spring journey. Combine Suzhou’s gardens with Hangzhou’s lakeside paths and tea country. Build in a weather alternative: a museum or an unhurried tea visit can make a rainy day rewarding.
Summer: choose pace carefully
Warm months invite time in landscapes, but heat, rain and school holidays can affect the day. Start walks when conditions are comfortable and keep room for rest. A highland route needs its own preparation, rather than being a simple escape from city temperatures.

Autumn: light and changing colours
Beijing, the northern landscapes and many mountain regions offer appealing autumn possibilities. Decide whether your priority is walking, photography or cultural visits. Check the holiday calendar and leave booking plans flexible until arrangements are confirmed.
Winter: coast or city
A winter journey might finish by the sea in Hainan or focus on museums, food and neighbourhoods in a city. Check local conditions rather than relying on a single countrywide description: China’s regions do not share one winter climate.
